About Our Wine Education and Culinary Pairing Experts
Wine is not just a beverage; it is a geography lesson in a glass.
At Houseofwinegr, we spend our days pulling corks, walking vineyards, and translating the complex world of viticulture into approachable insights. We built this platform because we noticed a gap between the academic world of master sommeliers and the everyday enthusiast standing in the wine aisle. You want to know what to pour with Tuesday night's roast chicken, and you want to understand why a Chablis tastes different from an oaky Napa Chardonnay without needing a chemistry degree.
Our focus remains firmly on the glass in front of us. We explore everything—from obscure indigenous Greek varietals to classic Bordeaux blends, sharing our field notes with you.
Editorial Mission and Tasting Standards
We believe wine education should be accessible, not intimidating. Our Wine Education guides strip away the pretension often associated with tasting.
When we evaluate a bottle, we look for typicity. Does this Assyrtiko actually taste like the volcanic soils of Santorini? We recently tasted a lineup of high-altitude Malbecs. Instead of just listing fruit flavors, we focused on how the diurnal temperature shifts gave the wine its gripping acidity. That is the level of specificity we aim for in every review.
Independent Review Methodology
Evaluating wine requires a systematic approach. Many publications rely on massive blind tasting panels where palate fatigue inevitably sets in by the fiftieth glass. We take a different route.
Our Tasting Notes are developed over hours, not minutes. We open a bottle, taste it immediately, and then revisit it over the course of an evening to see how oxygen interacts with the structure. This slow-tasting method gives a more accurate representation of how you will actually consume the wine at home.
While our team holds various industry certifications, we recognize that tasting remains inherently subjective. A certified palate helps identify flaws like cork taint or volatile acidity, but your personal preference ultimately dictates a wine's true value.
Our Sommelier and Editorial Team
The voices behind Houseofwinegr come from restaurant floors, vineyard cellars, and culinary kitchens. We are a collective of wine professionals dedicated to sharing our ongoing education.
Elena Rostova
Lead Sommelier
Elena spent a decade running beverage programs in Mediterranean-focused restaurants before shifting to full-time wine writing. She specializes in low-intervention winemaking and indigenous European grapes.
Marcus Thorne
Culinary Director
Marcus develops our Food Pairings. As a former executive chef, he understands how salt, fat, and acid interact with tannin and alcohol on the palate.
Regional Collaborations and Trust
Building relationships with winemakers is crucial to understanding the liquid in the bottle. Since 2021, we have maintained ongoing dialogues with regional wine boards across Europe and the Americas. These multi-year collaborations allow us to access detailed harvest reports and climate data, which we translate into our Winery Guides.
We also keep a close eye on industry shifts. Our Happenings section covers the cultural and environmental changes impacting your favorite regions. Whether it is a shift toward sustainable farming practices or the rise of a new appellation, we provide the context you need to stay informed.
If you have questions about a specific vintage or need pairing advice for an upcoming dinner, feel free to reach out through our Contact Us page. We are always happy to talk wine.
